I actually never cared to figure this out but yes, you can connect to the switch using IPoIB to update firmware and whatnot (according to the manual). Here's a link to the manual
Now I have no idea where to get the last firmware for it, nor do I know what cable I need to get to the serial port but I can grab a few from work and try. You need to configure the IP address of the switch using the CLI for the first time, here's a sample from the manual:
ISR 9288/9096/9024 (config-if-IB)# ip-address-ib show
ip is 192.168.1.8
ip mask is 255.255.255.0
broadcast ip is 192.168.1.255
management interface is IB
You also might be able to query temps with SNMP and if you get the managed switch version, should be able to pull more. They describe temps on page 5-23
